Vinyasa yoga is a dynamic form of yoga that is also known as flow yoga. By coordinating a sequence of poses with the breath, you flow from one pose to the next seamlessly.
The style stems from ashtanga yoga. The difference lies in the fixed set of postures that Pattabi Jois envisioned for ashtanga yoga – the sequences of a vinyasa yoga class differ from one class to the next. The name comes from Sanskrit and means ‘in a special way’ (Vi) ‘place’ (Nyasa).
The positive effect on the body can be experienced on many different levels. Vinyasa is sometimes referred to as a “workout” style yoga because of the heat generated within muscle metabolism. That’s why you can sweat it all out during a Vinyasa class: you give your body the chance to remove waste products and your skin gets a healthy glow.
