Aerial yoga is a relatively new form of yoga that combines traditional yoga asanas with pilates, dance and aerial acrobatics. You can stand, sit, lie, hang, swing, fly and float in the aerial silks.
Aerial yoga provides an opportunity to experience the healing effects of a supported inversion. Just hanging upside down in the silk hammocks will create full decompression of the spine which has a therapeutic effect on the back and neck.
Core and lower back strength as well as full body flexibility, alignment and balance are further developed. The aerial silks make some yoga poses easier and other poses more challenging where extreme concentration and the use of all your tiny muscles are required to keep your balance. The flying and swinging poses bring an extra fun element to your yoga practice, awakening your inner child.
The use of the silks and conscious breathing, can help to reduce tension and resistance on a physical, mental and emotional level, allowing us to open our mind and body further. Fear of inversions (e.g. headstands and handstands) can be overcome with the help of the silks.
An aerial yoga class ends with a floating savasana, the ultimate form of relaxation. Supported by the silk hammocks, you can surrender completely and float far away in your own cocoon, and completely relax from head to toe. Bliss!
