In yin yoga, where the focus is on stillness rather than movement, each pose is held for about 3 to 5 minutes. You don’t use the body to get into a pose. You use the pose to get into the body which has a soothing effect on both the body and mind.
Yin yoga was established in the early 1980s by Paul Grilley. He believed that building and maintaining flexibility within the body’s joints and connective tissue is what makes the body strong and fit. Where most forms of physical activity work to strengthen muscles, yin yoga works to restore the strength and flexibility of our joints and connective tissue.
You achieve the greatest effect when you practice yin yoga in combination with a more energetic form of yoga, such as vinyasa yoga or aerial yoga. Yin yoga can also be a great support to other physical activities, such as running or strength training.
Aerial yin yoga is a combination of yin yoga and aerial yoga. By staying in each pose for 3 to 5 minutes with the support of the silk hammocks, gravity does all the work for you and allows you to go much deeper into each pose.
